Changing the Story I Told Myself About Money
For years, I carried beliefs about money that weren’t even mine. I thought I was bad with money. That people like me didn’t build wealth. That money was always going to be stressful. These ideas felt like facts, but they were just stories I’d never questioned because I didn’t even know they were there.
One day, I sat down and really listened to those thoughts. I asked myself, “Where did this come from? Is this really true?” It was uncomfortable but freeing. I started to rewrite those stories. Instead of “I’m bad with money,” I told myself, “I’m learning how to manage money in my own way.” Instead of “People like me don’t build wealth,” I said, “I can create financial security for myself.”
It didn’t change everything overnight. But it started to loosen the grip those old beliefs had on me. Suddenly, money felt less like a battle and more like a challenge I could face.

Learning Where Stress Lived in My Body
Nobody had ever told me that financial anxiety was a physical experience. I thought stress was just in my head. But it wasn’t. It lived in my chest, my head, my back, and my stomach all at once. When my nervous system went into survival mode, my brain shut down the part responsible for planning and decision-making.
That’s why my laptop kept closing. That’s why nothing was sticking. It wasn’t laziness or lack of willpower. It was biology. Once I understood this, I stopped fighting myself. Instead of pushing harder, I started working with myself.
I learned to notice when my body was tense or overwhelmed. I gave myself permission to pause. I practiced breathing and gentle movement to calm my nervous system. This wasn’t about being perfect. It was about being kind to myself.
Starting to Rest on Purpose
This sounds too simple. It’s not. I used to think rest was something I earned after I worked hard. But I was wrong. Rest is part of the work. It’s how I recharge and come back stronger.
I began scheduling rest like an appointment. Not just any rest, but the kind that feels good. Sometimes it was a nap. Other times, a slow walk outside or sitting quietly with a cup of tea. Rest helped me clear my head and see my finances with fresh eyes.
Rest wasn’t a break from progress. It was progress.
Finding Support That Felt Right
I tried going it alone for a long time. I thought I had to fix everything by myself. But that only made me feel more isolated and stuck.
When I finally reached out for support, everything shifted. I found people who understood what I was going through. Not just financial experts, but friends and mentors who listened without judgment.
Having someone to talk to made the journey less scary. It gave me new ideas and kept me accountable. Support didn’t mean someone else would fix my problems. It meant I didn’t have to carry the weight alone.
Letting Go of Perfection
I wanted to do everything perfectly. Every payment on time. Every dollar accounted for. But perfectionism was a trap. It made me freeze when things didn’t go as planned.
I learned to let go of that. I gave myself grace when I missed a payment or made a mistake. I reminded myself that progress is messy and imperfect. What mattered was that I kept moving forward.
This shift helped me stay motivated. It made paying off debt feel doable, not overwhelming.
The Holistic Approach to Financial Wellness
Paying off $75,000 of debt wasn’t about budgets or cutting every expense. It was about changing how I saw money, understanding my body, resting, finding support, and letting go of perfection. These things didn’t just help me pay off debt. They helped me build a healthier relationship with money and myself.
If any of this sounds familiar, I want you to know something. You are not alone. And it does not have to stay this way.
